According to a new UN report, such developments have allowed global warming gas emissions to rise to a record level in 2019. This year, the pandemic has led to a short-term decline in climate pollution, with economies stalled, with people avoiding travel and working from home. Emissions have fallen by about 7% this year compared to 2019, according to a new estimate by an international scientific team published in the journal Earth System Science Data. However, emissions are expected to recover as economies emerge. Implementation of the agreement by all Member States will be evaluated every five years, with the first evaluation in 2023. The result will be used as an input for new national contributions from Member States. The inventory will not be national contributions/achievements, but a collective analysis of what has been achieved and what remains to be done. No responsible leader can bring workers – and people – of their country into this debilitating and enormous disadvantage. The fact that the Paris Agreement is hampering the United States, while allowing some of the world`s largest polluters, should dispel any doubt as to why foreign lobbyists want to link and bind our great country to this agreement: it is about giving their country an economic advantage over the United States.
That will not happen as long as I am president. I am sorry. (Applause) Nicolas Holiber`s old wood carvings highlight the threat that climate change poses to bird towns. InDCs become CNDs – nationally determined contributions – as soon as a country formally adheres to the agreement. There are no specific requirements as to how or how many countries should reduce emissions, but there were political expectations about the nature and rigour of the targets set by different countries. As a result, the scale and ambition of national plans vary widely, largely reflecting each country`s capacity, level of development and contribution to emissions over time. China, for example, has committed to cleaning up its CO2 emissions by 2030 at the latest and reducing CO2 emissions per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 60-65% by 2030 from 2005 levels. India has set a target of reducing emissions intensity by 33-35% from 2005 levels by 2030 and producing 40% of its electricity from non-fossil fuels. The Paris Agreement reflects the collective belief of almost every nation on the planet that climate change is humanity`s war to fight it, and reveals America`s climate-sceptics – including Trump – as global outliers.
Indeed, the mobilization of support for climate action across the country and around the world gives hope that the Paris Agreement has marked a turning point in the fight against climate change. We can all contribute to the cause by looking for ways to reduce contributions to global warming, at the individual, local and national levels. The effort will be worth the reward of a safer and cleaner world for future generations. You could be forgiven for thinking that the United States left the global agreement on climate change a long time ago. Since 2017, when President Trump announced his intention to abandon the pact, he has been talking about withdrawal as if it were a final deal.
